Mississippi lawyer allegedly smuggled cell phones and other contraband into prison

Mississippi attorney Daniel Sidney Dale has been charged with attempting to bring cell phones, cigar wrappers and other contraband into a correctional facility while posing as inmate counsel.

According to Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones, Dale was charged with two counts of conspiracy and three counts of introducing contraband into a correctional facility.

“Attorney Dale, in a position of trust responsible for the constitutional rights of arrested suspects, compromised the safety and integrity of the Hinds County Detention Facilities and the public. This investigation is ongoing and additional charges and/or arrests are possible,” Jones said on WJTV.

The sheriff said Dale posed as the inmates’ legal counsel upon entering the facility and smuggled contraband to them on several occasions.

Dale was caught with contraband on Thursday and arrested by authorities.

The sheriff’s department said further investigations are underway and additional arrests may be made.

According to a report last year, at least 360 employees of Georgia’s state prison system have been arrested on charges of smuggling contraband since 2018.

Almost 80 percent of those arrested were women, the majority of them were 30 years old or younger.
