Mike Tomlin declines to publicly name Week 7 starting QB

If you thought Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin would officially name a starting quarterback for Sunday night’s game against the Jets, think again.

Tomlin told reporters in his press conference Friday that he has decided who will start at the position between Russell Wilson and Justin Fields.

He just doesn’t say who that is.

“I’ll just do it Keep this in house” said Tomlin, via Chris Adamski of the Pittsburgh Tribune Review. “I thought (Wilson) was smart. I also found Justin sharp. I think we had an extremely productive week for both guys and for the entire unit.”

Tomlin added that the Steelers could “certainly” use both quarterbacks against New York.

Tomlin may not make it official, but it’s been clear all week that Pittsburgh plans to start Wilson on Sunday. From offensive tackle Dan Moore Jr., referring to Wilson took over the representation of the first team on Wednesdayuntil Fields looked and sounded disappointed with his performance during his weekly press conference – All signs point to No. 3 taking over the QB1 role in Week 7 after Wilson finally recovers from his calf injury.

The Steelers enter the weekend ranked 21st in points scored and 26th in total yards allowed so far this season. Fields has completed 66 percent of his throws for 1,106 yards with five touchdowns and one interception. He also rushed for 231 yards with a team-high five TDs.

The Steelers play the Jets on Sunday night and the Giants next Monday night before their Week 9 bye – which could give Pittsburgh another opportunity to assess its quarterback situation.
