Mike Norvell asked if he considered benching DJ Uiagalelei in the loss to Boston College

Boston College bullies Florida State in stunning Labor Day | It’s time to trade Dju for Brock Glenn

On a terrible Monday night for State of Florida, Mike Norvell decided against making any changes in the game. Despite the chants of the spectators in Doak Campbell Stadium Brock Glenn‘s name, Norvell stayed with DJ Uiagalelei as quarterback during the Boston College loss.

When asked about his decision not to bench Uiagalelei, Norvell instead took the opportunity to use a little coaching speak. He believes Florida State’s coaching staff needs to focus on putting players in the right position to succeed. Norvell’s main goal is to find a way to make sure the Seminoles improve.

“We struggled on offense,” Norvell said during his postgame press conference. “There were a lot of reasons for that. Everything we do, we have to put in the effort and get better. That’s what we’re going to focus on. We’re going to focus on putting in the effort to get better. We’re going to put our guys in a position to be successful and that’s what we’re going to focus on.”

Uiagalelei ended up with 272 yards, one touchdown and one interception, and was able to successfully complete 50% of his 42 pass attempts. Of course, there were also a few drops, but the fifth-year quarterback should have made a few throws automatically.

There were some positive moments in the final quarter of the fourth, which Norvell highlighted in his commentary, but the passing game did not help the team’s flow in the early going.

“It didn’t click a lot,” Norvell said. “We had trouble winning one-on-one situations early on. There were moments when they were pressuring us, we missed a shot or missed a catch and tried to find a rhythm on offense. We didn’t do that very well. I think we did that a little later when we got going. We had some explosive plays that showed up.”

Florida State has an off week after playing two games before Week 1 was officially completed. Memphis is next on the schedule, with Norvell’s old program coming to Tallahassee and an immediate win is a must for the “Noles”.

There is still a lot of work to be done, but the head coach’s main goal seems to be to get the offense up and running quickly, no matter who the quarterback is.

“We have to be able to start fast,” Norvell said. “We have to go out there and be able to compete and win our one-on-one situations and follow through on progressions. We have to be able to defend. And then of course we have to keep the balance in the running game.”
