Michigan’s Sherrone Moore trained without a signed contract

The Michigan Wolverines have one game in the Sherrone Moore era behind them. At least in the record books.

Last week, it was revealed that Moore has not yet signed a contract with the Wolverines, although he continues to lead the program, according to USA Today. In January, he was announced with a letter of intent to succeed head coach Jim Harbaugh – who became the new head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers shortly after Michigan won the College Football Playoff National Championship. That agreement was “contingent on the signing of a full employment contract within 90 days.” The deadline passed without a deal.

Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel explained Moore’s status.

“They’re being worked on right now,” Manuel said in an interview with On3 about Moore’s status. “I signed a couple of the assistant coaches. We had a move not only in football, but in basketball, we’re dealing with NCAA matters, we’re dealing with the situation with our apparel supplier and getting Legends signed as early as Saturday. These things take time, the contracts.”

Manuel also said that Moore understands the school’s “commitment” to him and vice versa, and that he is optimistic that an agreement will be reached in the end.

Michigan won its first game with Moore as permanent head coach last week at home against the Fresno State Bulldogs. The Wolverines emerged victorious 30-10 despite being up by just six points with 10:06 left. Next up for the No. 10 Wolverines is a home game against the No. 3 Texas Longhorns — also in the College Football Playoff last season — on Big Noon Saturday (noon ET on FOX and the FOX Sports app).

Moore served as Michigan’s assistant coach for four games last season while Harbaugh served multiple suspensions, one of which was recently imposed on Moore, in connection with the NCAA’s investigation into the Wolverines for allegedly operating a sign-stealing scheme based on gaining unauthorized access to opposing teams’ signals on the field.

Moore has been part of Michigan’s coaching staff since 2018, starting as tight ends coach (2018-20), then serving as co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach (2021-22), and then offensive coordinator, offensive line coach and acting head coach (2023).
