Michigan Wolverines vs Arkansas State Red Wolves

Angelique S. Chengelis, Madeline Kenney, John Niyo and Bob Wojnowski of The Detroit News predict the outcome of Saturday’s Michigan-Arkansas State game at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor (12 p.m., BTN/950).

Angelique S. Chengelis: Michigan’s Big Ten season begins in a week, but the most important thing for the Wolverines is trying to fix their many problems. The Wolverines are 1-1 and their Associated Press ranking has fallen to No. 17 after a 31-12 loss to Texas that exposed so many deficiencies. The Wolverines are clear favorites against Arkansas State and will need to find a way to refocus and work on the gaps in their offense and defense. The Red Wolves rank 100th nationally in total defense and have had trouble stopping the run, so this should be an opportunity for Michigan to find the run-emphasizing identity that the coaches say they want to establish. Arkansas State can move the ball, though, and ranks 37th nationally in passing offense (286 yards per game). Michigan’s secondary will be tested again, which isn’t a bad thing considering USC is coming up. Selection: Michigan, 31-13

Madeline Kenney: Michigan’s brutal loss to Texas last week damaged the team’s pride and its national ranking. The Wolverines have plummeted to No. 17 in the AP Top 25 after opening the season at No. 9. But on Saturday, Michigan has a chance to get back on track as Arkansas State comes to town before Big Ten play begins. One of the home team’s biggest concerns is that its offense lacks a true playmaking star. Donovan Edwards, a quick, versatile and marketable senior, has shown at times he can be that guy, but the Wolverines need him on a consistent basis. Saturday seems like a good time for him to break through. Selection: Michigan, 30-16

John Niyo: It was jarring to see Michigan lose the line of scrimmage so many times against Texas. That shouldn’t happen against Arkansas State, which has allowed nearly 400 rushing yards to Central Arkansas and Tulsa so far. If the Wolverines don’t get going offensively in this game, they have more serious problems than anyone thought. We’ll see if there will be some personnel changes on offense early in this game, but for now it’s time to try some new things for Sherrone Moore and his team because USC is up next. Selection: Michigan, 38-10

Bob Wojnowski: The Red Wolves are 2-0, including a 28-24 win over Tulsa, and can be dangerous under former CMU and Tennessee coach Butch Jones. Michigan needs to establish itself early, and if it ever wants to get its running game going, now is the time to do it. The specialty positions — quarterback, running back, receiver — obviously need improvement. Davis Warren showed a good knack for mid-range throws, but Michigan couldn’t sustain drives (or blocks) against Texas. It’s a cliche, but Sherrone Moore needs to go back to his roots on the offensive line, running with Kalel Mullings, Donovan Edwards and others. The defense needs to be much better on third down, with powerful USC coming to town next. Will Johnson, Kenneth Grant and Mason Graham should get a chance to reestablish their dominance, and the Wolverines should get a chance to heal a few wounds. Selection: Michigan, 40-10
