Michigan voters are flocking to the poles for the final weekend of early voting

(CBS DETROIT) – It is the last weekend when you can vote early in person for the general election.

As of Saturday afternoon, more than 879,000 voters in Michigan had cast their ballots in person, according to the state’s voting dashboard.

Since early in-person voting began, there has been a consistently long line of early voters at the Troy Community Center.

“It was busier than we expected, which is great. We average about 1,000 voters per day,” Troy City Clerk Aileen Dickson said.

Many choose to vote early to avoid the long lines on Election Day.

“Both sides are very motivated this year, so I thought the lines might be a little longer on Election Day, so I just wanted to get out early and cast my vote,” said Kyle Thelen, an early voter.

Others were in the right place at the right time.

“I was here for the exercise class, but I wanted to take advantage of early voting to avoid possible long lines on Tuesday,” said Nancy Shimel of Troy.

Waiting times ranged from 45 minutes to two hours.

“We came on Monday, we came yesterday and the lines were really long, so we thought we’d just come today when we have time,” Susan Thelen said.

Clerks say if your goal is to vote in person, be prepared to wait.

“Make a plan and be prepared for a queue if there is one. Bring your book or your coffee or whatever,” Dickson said.

Early voters say it’s important for their voices to be heard.

“There are so many issues that affect women in particular and their right to control their own bodies, and that is very important to me,” Thelen said.

For these voters, spending the weekend waiting in line to cast their vote was worth it.

“I think it’s important to have input into what’s happening in our government. You have a say, and if you don’t, someone will decide for you,” said Danielle Kassab, an early voter.

Sunday is the last day for early in-person voting in Michigan.
