Michigan State coach Jonathan Smith secures another surprising win

After the bye week, Michigan State was looking for a win to stop its bleeding three-game losing streak.

While the Spartans showed their potential this season, the final month of the season was probably the most challenging week coach Jonathan Smith has had since arriving in East Lansing.

After losing two games to teams better than the Spartans and losing one game to Boston College, they could have won. Smith said it felt good to get another win after three straight losses.

“Well, I’m really happy for our guys,” Smith said after the win. “These guys worked and did a good job. I thought we really had two weeks to prepare for this week and it showed. Just a team win; You can talk about all three phases that contribute to this phase. I was really, really happy with them.

“A lot also depends on the reaction: There were a few chances in the first half, but we went into the game with a slight lead at halftime. I knew they would respond with their culture and the nature of their team, and they did. They pushed us in the second half, managed to get within a goal a couple of times and the reaction from this group was huge.”

In particular, Smith credited kicker Jonathan Kim with helping the Spartans score points despite failing to score touchdowns. Kim made six of his seven field goal attempts and two extra points. He almost topped Iowa single-handedly.

“And then, I mean, Jonathan Kim, this thing is critical,” Smith said. “In the first half he hit them swingingly and in the second half he had a few more big kicks. Any time you make six field goals like that, I don’t think we fumbled all night, we only turned it over once. The offensive efficiency was enormous. Since they didn’t have the ball in their hands, I think the time of possession was almost two to one.

“I’m just really proud because this is a good football team,” Smith said said. “They are well trained. Coach Ferentz, utmost respect for him and what he does and will continue to do. I’m so happy to have a win at Homecoming in front of another great crowd.”

Michigan State is exactly where they want to be this season. The Spartans’ 4-3 record is almost the best possible scenario for the schedule they have faced this season. They will look to continue their winning streak with a win against their arch-rivals next week.
