Michigan CB injures toe against Illinois

play

Michigan football has suffered another major injury setback.

According to the CBS broadcast, All-American cornerback Will Johnson suffered a left toe injury during the first half against Illinois on Saturday (live updates). Johnson came out on Michigan’s first defensive possession and did not return to the game, a 21-7 loss for Michigan.

“At the end of the first quarter, he left the field and went straight to the injury tent,” said CBS sideline reporter Jenny Dell. “They changed his shoes and his orthotics, guys, keep an eye on the left ankle when he goes back in.”

WHAT’S UP: Michigan football ripped apart by CBS analysts and fans after ‘pathetic’ performance against Illinois

Dell assumed early in the third quarter that it was questionable whether Johnson would return for the second half, but he didn’t have his helmet on.

Johnson missed a game against Minnesota this season and left the USC game early with a shoulder injury. He is a key cog in Michigan’s disruptive defense with his lockdown coverage and has two interceptions in five games, both of which were returned for touchdowns. He is a projected top-10 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

THE GAME: Michigan’s football offense appears to have been completely broken by Illinois’ 21-7 thrashing

Michigan was already without left tackle Myles Hinton, defensive tackle Rayshaun Benny and defensive back Ja’Den McBurrows as three key players among a dozen Wolverines listed as out or questionable before the game after a bye week.

We’ll be monitoring Johnson’s status over the next week as Michigan (4-3, 2-2 Big Ten) prepares to play in-state rival Michigan State on Saturday night in Ann Arbor.
