Michael Keaton reveals whether he would ever make Beetlejuice 3

Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice became a cult classic and a sequel premiered this year, 36 years after the original. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice exceeded expectations and became a successful sequel, and Michael Keaton clarified whether he would reprise his role in a possible case Beetlejuice 3.




The film’s 1988 sequel brought back several characters alongside Keaton’s title character. Catherine O’Hara and Winona Ryder reprized their roles as Delia and Lydia Deetz, with Jenna Ortega joining the sequel as a new generation of Deetz women, playing Astrid, Lydia’s daughter. Speaking to E! News, Michael Keaton confirmed that he was definitely interested in a third part.

When I brought Michael Keaton back to play the poltergeist Betelgeuse, it felt like no time had passed. Keaton explained that there was no need for Keaton to understand the character again as filming did not involve any preparation. “We didn’t rehearse, we didn’t do anything,” Burton revealed about filming the upcoming sequel. “So He comes and it was really like a demonic possession. It felt like traveling back in time. You’re right; it was disturbing. It was great, it was exciting, but it was also really disturbing.


Burton further explained that the sequel involved a lot of improvisation and he had not even watched the original before starting work on the sequel. “It was a bit like the first film. I tried to treat this film like the spirit of the first film we had a script for, but there was a lot of improvisation.”

Would Beetlejuice 3 happen?

The sequel became one of the biggest films of 2024, grossing $406.4 million at the worldwide box office against a budget of $100 million. Sales were almost five times higher than the original, which was a huge success at the time, grossing $84 million.

Burton told CBR’s Kevin Polowy in a roundtable interview before the premiere: “Let’s do the math. It took 35 years to do this“,” Burton explained. “On the other hand, I would be over 100 (years old). Thanks to medical science, it might be possible. But I do not believe that.”


Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is showing in cinemas and can be rented or purchased on digital platforms.
