Mexican Independence Day in Chicago: Parade begins in Little Village as El Grito festival continues; road closures lifted

CHICAGO (WLS) — Since Sunday morning, all road closures have been lifted as revelers have gone home for Mexican Independence Day.

The city implemented its plan to close the central business district to incoming traffic this weekend.

This also included freeway ramps to the Loop. Michigan Avenue was also closed between Wacker and Lake Street.

There were a few car convoys in the city center, but nothing like in previous years. The police had the crowds well under control.

This comes after the first citywide event called El Grito kicked off Saturday in Grant Park, a party featuring the best of Mexican culture in downtown Chicago.

The festival takes place on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Around 10,000 visitors are expected.

Now the focus on Sunday turns to the 400,000 people expected to participate in the Mexican Independence Day parade in Little Village.

It starts at noon at the corner of 26th and Albany and ends at the corner of 26th and Kostner.

Jennifer Aguilar, president of the Little Village Chamber of Commerce, says the entire neighborhood is in the midst of a Pride festival as they prepare for the 53rd annual parade.

If you plan to attend the parade, authorities are urging people to arrive early and use public transportation.

Mayor Brandon Johnson is also expected to be in attendance.
