New York Mets All-Star Pete Alonso sees the glass half full when it comes to his work for the 2024 MLB season.

Alonso is on pace to set career lows in several hitting categories this year. With his 25 home runs and 63 RBIs, he is expected to finish the 2024 season with 35 home runs and 88 runs batted in. While those numbers are notable, they pale in comparison to the 46 home runs and 118 RBIs he hit in 2023, his 53 home runs as a rookie in 2019 and his career-high 131 RBIs in 2022.

For Alonso, however, the win, coupled with his confidence at bat, is the most important thing as the Mets go through the most important phase in the fight for the playoff spots in the National League.

Mets: Pete Alonso places more value on victories than on striking individual statistics

According to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, the Floridian native recently had this to say about his game and what he’s looking forward to as the season ends:

“I mean, I’m on pace to hit almost 40 home runs,” Alonso said. “I’m an All-Star, or I was an All-Star this year. So there’s really no point in beating myself up or being frustrated. And I’m really looking forward to the end of the year when we’re playing winning baseball.”

Alonso’s weak season could coincide with his best playoff series

Alonso has only made one playoff appearance since entering the league in 2019. Additionally, the four-time All-Star has never made it past the Wild Card round in the NL, with his only appearance coming in 2021, the season in which he led the Mets to 101 wins.

It’s true that Alonso isn’t flirting with records at the plate this season. However, the Mets have been on a roll since June, going 37-22 during that time with Alonso in the lineup. New York is currently one spot behind the No. 6 seed Atlanta Braves in the Wild Card race. Their position is constantly fluctuating, but could well end with them making a World Series appearance this fall.

The No. 1 seed Philadelphia Phillies and No. 2 seed Los Angeles Dodgers are two powerhouses that are considered clear favorites to finish atop the NL. However, Alonso has so far led the Mets to a win over the San Diego Padres (3-0) and a .500 record against the Arizona Diamondbacks (2-2) and Atlanta Braves (5-5).

The Mets have a good chance of beating any of the three teams currently ahead of them in the standings, and there’s no telling which way the wind will blow for the 29-year-old at bat as the season draws to a close.

His barrel percentage of 12.3 percent, which puts him in the 83rd percentile in that category, suggests his exit velocity and launch angle on hits are where they need to be for him to have success later in the year and hopefully prevail in a playoff run. A win at the 2024 NLWC would make 2024 Alonso’s most successful season yet. Anything beyond that will carry a lot of weight on his resume.
