U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) recently seized more than two tons of illegal drugs disguised as products from a semi-trailer truck at a border crossing.

The drug seizure occurred on August 16 at the Otay Mesa Commercial Facility in Otay Mesa, California.

According to officials, a 29-year-old man transporting a load of watermelons approached the facility and attempted to enter the United States from Mexico.

The tractor-trailer was referred for a second examination.

“In the area of the second inspection, the watermelon shipment was unloaded into the ICU for further examination. Upon close inspection, officers discovered 1,220 paper-wrapped packages disguised as watermelons. The contents of the packages were tested and identified as methamphetamine with a total weight of 4,587 pounds. The estimated street value of the drugs exceeds $5 million,” CBP said.

The drugs and the semi-trailer were seized by CBP.

The truck driver was handed over to the Department of Homeland Security investigation.

“I am incredibly proud of our team and their exceptional work over the past few weeks in uncovering sophisticated and diverse smuggling methods,” said Rosa E. Hernandez, Port Director of the Otay Mesa Regional Port. “As drug cartels continue to evolve their smuggling techniques, we will continue to find new and better ways to prevent these dangerous drugs and other contraband from entering the country.”
