Meteorologist: Stormy weather in Manitoba triggers tornado warnings, but no landings

Stormy weather prevailed across southern Manitoba on Monday — even some tornado warnings were issued — but an Environment Canada meteorologist said nothing but rain hit the ground.

Justin Shaer said 680 CJOB’s The start that the region received a fair amount of rain, between 20 and 30 millimeters.

“It has spread basically from the Morden and Killarney area to Whiteshell and the Ontario border in the east,” Shaer said.

“It was a small low pressure system below us in the Dakotas that caused this. We even had a few storms that had tornado warnings, but we didn’t get any reports of anything.”

The type of storms the region has experienced are more common in the summer months, but also occur in the fall, especially when it is still hot outside, he said.

Inevitably, however, a cooler fall season is looming, but overall the rest of September in southern Manitoba should be “pretty nice,” according to Shaer.

“Under this system, we will still have a decent decline, be it with highs in the high teens or lows overnight in the single digits,” he said.

“But at least in the high single digits. We do not expect anything to exceed this zero threshold in the foreseeable future.”
