Members work, play on Marco

The Calusa Garden Club of Marco Island suspends its official meetings from May through September, but members continue to work in the club’s community gardens, plan its “seasonal” meetings from October through April, and maintain social gatherings throughout the summer.

On Saturday, August 3, club members Susan LaGrotta, chair of the Butterfly Garden Committee, Nancy Adams and Pam Bodenhamer were busy weeding the Calusa Park Butterfly Garden and beginning planning for the Butterfly Garden’s 15th anniversary celebration this fall.

The celebration will take place on October 23 at 11 a.m. in the Butterfly Garden on Winterberry Drive and is open to the public.

That same Saturday, garden club members Marianne Foley, Sue Oldershaw and Nanette Baumgardner were planting plants on N. Barfield Drive and lining the garden beds in Leigh Plummer Park. As they worked, walkers in the park stopped to talk to them and say how much they enjoyed the beautiful planting beds and blooming orchids.

On Monday, August 5, members of the Calusa Garden Club met for an informal lunch at the Deep Lagoon Seafood Restaurant. Summer-Timers Lunch organizers Audrina Flowers and Diane Chestnut welcomed 12 members who enjoyed the social lunch. Participants were encouraged to bring a gardening tool that members may not be familiar with, and members then guess what the tool might be used for. Linda Colombo won the day with her “Grandpa’s Weeder.”

The Calusa Garden Club of Marco Island is a Section 501(c)3 organization and a member of the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc. Membership is open to individuals interested in horticulture, floral design and environmental issues who reside in Collier County for at least five months.

The Calusa Garden Club of Marco Island meets the second Monday of every month from October through April in the Rose Hall of the Marco Island Library branch. If you are interested in becoming a member, contact the Garden Club at [email protected].
