McConnell said Trump’s “MAGA movement is completely wrong,” according to a new book

Senator Mitch McConnell said the MAGA movement was “totally wrong” and that Donald Trump had “caused great damage” to the Republican Party, a new book reveals.

McConnell, who has long been critical of the former president, delivered a scathing assessment of how Trump has transformed the GOP so that Ronald Reagan would “unrecognize” the party today.

The revelations are in McConnell’s upcoming biography by Michael Tackett, titled ” The price of power. The Republican senator from Kentucky gave Tackett personal recordings of his oral histories spanning nearly three decades.

“I think Trump was the biggest factor in changing the Republican Party from what Ronald Reagan saw, and he wouldn’t recognize it today,” McConnell told Tackett, according to an excerpt from the book obtained by CNN .

He added that Trump “has done great damage to our party’s image and our competitiveness.”

McConnell said: “Trump appeals to people who haven’t been as successful as other people and provides an excuse that these more successful people have somehow been deceived and you don’t deserve to think of yourself as less successful because of those things.” “Were not fair.”

According to the biography, McConnell also supported federal criminal charges against Trump in connection with the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection and said he hoped the Republican would “pay a price” for the attack.

In the weeks leading up to Jan. 6, McConnell said privately that Trump was a “despicable human being” and a “narcissist” who was “as stupid as he was bad-tempered,” according to the book, which will be published Oct. 29. a week before the election.

McConnell told people privately that Trump’s behavior “just underscores the good judgment of the American people,” who have “just had enough of the misrepresentations and outright lies on an almost daily basis.”

“They fired him,” McConnell said, citing a well-known phrase Trump used on his reality TV show The apprentice.

“And for a narcissist like him, that’s really hard to take, and that’s why his behavior since the election is far worse than before, because now he has no filter at all,” McConnell said.

Despite years of arguments between Trump and McConnell and his scathing criticism of Trump in the book, the Republican senator publicly endorsed him as the Republican presidential candidate in March.

In a statement to CNN about the book, McConnell said: “Whatever I have said about President Trump pales in comparison to what JD Vance, Lindsey Graham and others have said about him, but we are all on the same team now. “
