Mbappé shocked by Swedish rape investigation

French soccer captain Kylian Mbappé is “astonished” that his name is being linked in media reports to a rape investigation in Sweden, but his lawyer says the player is calm because he has no reason to worry.

Swedish authorities have confirmed that a senior prosecutor is investigating a report of an alleged rape in Stockholm, without naming anyone connected to the case.

However, Swedish media are reporting that the French footballer is linked to the allegations, which involve an incident at a hotel in central Stockholm last Thursday.

Kylian Mbappé also reacted and summarized the reports to his 14 million followers on X as “FAKE NEWS”.

Swedish media said the footballer stayed in Stockholm for two days last week and visited a restaurant on Thursday evening before going to a nightclub. He was pictured with three other people in the center of the capital.

Swedish prosecutors clarified on Monday that the incident under investigation occurred in a hotel on October 10, according to a “criminal report” submitted to police.

Police officers were seen visiting the bank hotel where he was staying on Monday, and officers later left the hotel with bags. One report said they took clothing from the hotel as evidence.

The investigation is being led by Senior Prosecutor Marina Chirakovawho cannot provide any further information at this time,” said the Swedish law enforcement agency.

Mbappé was not selected for the French UEFA Nations League games last week and has returned to training with his team Real Madrid.

Lawyer Petra Eklund, who represents the complainant in the case, said she could not comment on the case at this time for legal reasons.

However, Sweden’s SVT and other media outlets reported that the allegation was reasonable suspicion of rape, which is considered lesser suspicion under Swedish law.

Kylian Mbappé’s lawyers have condemned the media reports as defamatory, and on Tuesday evening lawyer Marie-Alix Canu-Bernard appeared on TF1’s main evening news program and said nothing was known about the complaint or whether it was directed against her client be. She said she was “stunned” by the media frenzy.

“(Kylian Mbappé) is never alone. He will never be put in a situation where he is put in a situation that would cause him to take a risk,” she stressed.

“This means that any reprehensible actions on his part are completely ruled out. I can tell you that with absolute certainty.”

She said a complaint proved nothing and she was prepared to hit back with a defamation lawsuit.

Meanwhile, in his social media post on Monday night, the footballer appeared to link the reports emerging from Sweden to what he claims was a €55m (£46m) case with his former French club Paris Saint-Germain his wages and bonuses were not paid.

“It becomes as predictable on the eve of the hearing as if it were a coincidence,” he said.

Kylian Mbappé was the top goalscorer in PSG’s history but left the club in the summer after months of disputes. Tuesday’s hearing took place before an appeals committee of the French Football League (LFP). PSG denies the player’s allegations and another lawyer for Mbappé said a decision is expected on October 25.

Sweden’s rape laws were reformed in 2018so that a perpetrator can be convicted of negligent assault or rape if he “should have recognized that the other person was not participating voluntarily.”
