“Maxwell’s ‘Simply Beautiful’ Cover Hits No. 1 on Adult R&B Radio Charts”

Maxwell takes first place billboardreturns to the Adult R&B Airplay chart for the first time in over two years as his single “Simply Beautiful” tops the chart on October 12th. Rising from No. 2, the track was the most played song on U.S. adult R&B monitored radio stations during the tracking week of September 27 to October 3, according to Luminate, improving 9% in plays.

With his top cover, Maxwell reaches his ninth No. 1 on the Adult R&B Airplay charts. He joins Tank and Usher for the fourth most wins since the list began in 1993; The trio is only behind Alicia Keys (14), Toni Braxton (11) and Charlie Wilson (10) in the overall standings.

“Simply Beautiful,” distributed through Musze/BMG, is a cover of an Al Green track that the soul legend released on an album in 1972. I’m still in love with you. Although the cover is Maxwell’s first studio-released rendition of the song, the singer has performed the track live for years, including at the 2008 BET Awards, when Green received the Lifetime Achievement Award.

“To reach No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult R&B Airplay radio chart for the ninth time with my version of Al Green’s ‘Simply Beautiful’ is an honor,” shares Maxwell billboard. “Al is a true legend and force and I was thrilled when I heard his music for the first time. It reminds me of the impact great music can have and I’m just grateful to be a part of it.”

Maxwell’s last three Adult R&B Airplay appearances — the 2019 single “Shame,” which reached No. 8, “Off” and “Simply Beautiful” — have been standalone singles to date. The Grammy Award winner’s final album, blackSUMMERS’nightwas published in 2016.

Elsewhere, “Simply Beautiful” moves up to No. 15-12 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart, which ranks songs by combined viewership on adult R&B and mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop radio stations. There, the cover single recorded 5.7 million viewers, an increase of 18% compared to the previous week. The increase of three places makes it Maxwell’s best placement on the chart since “Lake By the Ocean” also peaked at No. 12 in 2016.
