Jayden Daniels calls it God’s gift. Mike Greenberg calls it “Matt Eberflus.”

After watching the Washington Commanders defeat his Bears in spectacular fashion on Sunday, Chicago’s head coach told reporters that the play immediately before the game-winning Hail Mary “didn’t really matter.”

“That’s one of the five stupidest things I’ve heard from any human being in my entire life, in any context,” Greenberg told the “Get Up” crew on Monday morning.

The play before, an unguarded 13-yard out route that set up the game-winning play, left the Get Up analysts as confused as the host.

Damien Woody couldn’t put his assessment into words and stared at the ceiling in disbelief.

Rex Ryan stammers through pseudo-comprehension before handing it over to former quarterback Dan Orlovsky.

“Dan, is it easier to throw the ball 50 to 60 yards or 80 yards?” Ryan asks.

Greenberg interrupted the conversation before Orlovsky could respond, although the camera follows Woody, who has now gotten up from his chair and is now pacing around the studio.

“When he says those 15 yards didn’t matter… Those 15 yards cost you the game as much as the Hail Mary game at the very end,” Greenberg said.

With six seconds left on the clock and Washington returning to its own 35, Commanders quarterback Daniels hit Terry McLaurin on a short out route to advance the ball to about midfield.

There is not a single defender within 15 yards of McLaurin when he catches the ball because the Bears had sent four to attack the quarterback and dropped the remaining seven defenders far down the field to prevent the touchdown.

Even with these “prevention” measures, the Get Up crew points out that most units place some defensive presence near the sidelines to make this very play at least somewhat challenging; Daniels probably wouldn’t be able to reach the end zone on a Hail Mary attempt from that far back even at full health, let alone while dealing with his rib injury.

But those 13 yards put the rookie sensation in range and he delivered. The ball traveled 65 yards through the air before landing right near the goal line, where it tipped backwards into the arms of Noah Brown, who was left all alone thanks to a stunning breakdown by the Bears defense.

The rest, as they say, is history. Greenberg thinks Eberflus should do the same.

“If I own the team and I hear the coach say that after the game, I’m having serious, serious conversations among people about whether he’s qualified to be the head coach of a National Football League team,” he said.

The Bears (4-3) will look to bounce back next Sunday against the Cardinals. The Commanders (6-2) travel to MetLife Stadium to face the Giants in Week 9.
