Matt Eberflus: Nice to see Caleb Williams’ hard work paying off

Caleb Williams took his first snaps as the Bears’ quarterback on Saturday, and they were productive snaps for the first-round pick in this year’s draft.

Williams completed 4 of 7 passes for 95 yards and led the Bears to two field goals. A couple of drops kept his numbers from looking even better, but Williams converted a long third down attempt with a pass to DJ Moore and found running back D’Andre Swift on a screen for a 42-yard gain on the first possession. Another pass to Moore and a 26-yard throw to tight end Cole Kmet were the highlights of his second possession.

Williams also gained 13 yards on a run and head coach Matt Eberflus said this was the result of all the effort the quarterback put in during practice.

“It is good for him,” Eberflus said, via the team’s website. “It’s the fruits of his labor. He worked his ass off for 15 practices and even the whole summer before that. So it’s good to be able to say, ‘Hey, all these drills, all the things I’ve been doing are paying off and I can see improvements.’ We’ll watch that tape and look back and say, ‘What can I learn from this?’ There’s a lot of things we can learn from that process, doing those reps like he does in practice when he’s going up against that one defense.”

For Williams, this is just the first step, but it was a positive one, and good feelings about the offense have long been in short supply in Chicago.
