Matt Chapman and Patrick Bailey represent Giants with NL Gold Glove nods – NBC Sports Bay Area and California

SAN FRANCISCO — While one giant was adding to its overflowing trophy case on Sunday, another was getting started.

Matt Chapman and Patrick Bailey were named Gold Glove Award winners, giving the Giants a pair for the first time since 2016, when there were three winners. San Francisco hasn’t had a winner the past two seasons, but Chapman and Bailey were easy choices at third base and catcher, respectively.

Bailey could have won as a rookie, but this year there was no question that he would win the first of several Gold Gloves for a catcher who is considered the best pitch-framer in baseball and is only 25 years old. Bailey threw 212 strikes for Giants pitchers, according to Inside Edge, and was worth 16 catcher framing runs, according to Baseball Savant. No other catcher in the Netherlands was above six.

“I’m very proud of that,” Bailey said. “Obviously I was a little frustrated that I didn’t make it last year, but I put in the work and wanted to improve in all aspects and was just excited to be able to win it this year.”

Bailey tied for the lead in MLB all-time and ranked third in the NL in caught steals rate. He joins Buster Posey, Mike Matheny and Kirt Manwaring as the only Giants catchers to win a Gold Glove. None of the previous three won twice, but considering how far ahead of the rest of the field Bailey was in pitch framing, he has a good chance of continuing to add to his collection in the years to come.

For Chapman, the honor was the fifth of his career and third in the last four seasons. Previously with the A’s and Toronto Blue Jays, he became the first Giants third baseman to win a Gold Glove since Matt Williams in 1993-94 and the fifth active player to win at least five times.

“There are a lot of really good defensive third basemen in the National League. I was able to come here and win, so I thought that was pretty cool,” he said. “To now get a spot in the American League and the National League means a lot to me.

Chapman led the Dutch third basemen with 17 defensive runs saved, seven more than the next closest option. He ranked first in Outs Above Average and Fielding Run Value.

The Giants rewarded Chapman in September with a six-year contract extension that will keep him in San Francisco through 2030. Bailey is under the team’s control until 2029.
