    STATE COLLEGE – For better or worse, the Penn State Nittany Lions face an opponent today at Beaver Stadium where everything went wrong.

    The No. 7 Lions are in the final stages of preseason mode, the toughest and most revealing part of their 2024 Big Ten schedule about to begin. Next weekend is their cross country trip to top 20 USC. Then a trip to the wild Camp Randall Stadium in Wisconsin. Then there was a showdown with the overpowering Ohio State Buckeyes.

    So what can Penn State football gain from today’s anticipated loss to the UCLA Bruins?

    The Lions are the four-touchdown favorite against this 1-3 team that has major problems on offense and defense. They come to town with a weak starting quarterback (who was sacked four times last week against Oregon) and little hope of revitalizing their rebuilding plan.

    The Lions, on the other hand, will be in cleanup mode. They will try to solve their mysterious penalty problems and exacerbate their shaky placings. It should be a day to keep the starters loose and focused before letting them rest on the sidelines as quickly as possible. A time to get their top backups in top fighting shape.

    The Bruins push into the red zone late and score their first touchdown of the day with a short pass to Logan Loya. They follow with a successful two-point conversion attempt.

    Ryan Barker kicked his second field goal of the game, this time from 40 yards out, after the Lions failed to convert on a third down from five yards out.

    The Lions’ defense held the Bruins to -9 total yards in the third quarter. Wheatley and Rojas lead the Lions with seven tackles each and are among nine players who have contributed to seven total tackles for a loss.

    Kaytron Allen has more rushing yards than UCLA’s top two rushers combined.

    Tony Rojas, Zakee Wheatley and Kobe King all lead the Lions on defense. Rojas recorded a team-high six tackles, while Wheatley and King each recorded five tackles. Rojas and Wheatley also had a tackle-for-loss each, while King added half a tackle-for-loss.

    Tyler Warren also set a new Penn State record after recording his 17th career touchdown following his five-yard reception in the second quarter. Warren’s score marked the most career touchdowns by a Penn State tight end. The previous record holder was Pat Freiermuth, who recorded a total of 16 touchdowns from 2018 to 2020.

    Allar completed his fifth pass of six attempts finding Tyler Warren for a five-yard touchdown. Allar completed five of his six pass attempts, covering 72 of the 75 total yards on the Penn State drive.

    UCLA responded to Penn State’s touchdown with an ensuing 68-yard drive, capped off with a 25-yard field goal by sophomore kicker Mateen Bhaghani.
