UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State Extension’s Master Watershed Steward program is holding its fifth annual native tree and shrub sale this fall at 27 locations across the state. A fundraiser for the program, the sale will feature 18 varieties of native trees and shrubs. Organizers are taking orders through Aug. 28, with curbside pickup available in September or October. Pickup dates and times vary by location.

Master Watershed Stewards plant trees to capture and infiltrate stormwater, stabilize soils and filter pollutants. Whether residents seek trees for privacy, for foliage, for shade, to attract pollinators or to create a beautiful landscape, organizers note that the program offers a variety of trees and shrubs to meet a wide range of needs.

Trees and shrubs are available in 1-gallon containers for $20, 2-gallon containers for $30, and 3-gallon containers for $40.

Master Watershed Stewards guarantee that you will receive a healthy specimen upon collection. Due to variations in planting, site conditions and care, no guarantee or refund is available after the tree has been collected.

Organizers urge residents to consider above- and below-ground utilities and mature growth size when selecting a tree for their property, and to always call 811 before digging. Details about each tree – such as average mature height, sun and soil moisture requirements and bloom time – are listed on the ordering website.

Orders can be placed online or by phone for one-day curbside pickup in the fall. All items must be pre-ordered. Plants cannot be purchased at pickup locations. Proceeds from sales benefit the Master Watershed Steward’s activities in this region.

The program offers pickup locations in the following counties: Adams, Allegheny, Berks, Bradford, Bucks, Centre, Chester, Cumberland, Dauphin, Delaware, Erie, Franklin, Lackawanna, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lycoming, McKean, Monroe, Montgomery, Northampton, Schuylkill, Susquehanna, Warren, Wayne, Westmoreland, Wyoming and York.

More information is available on the Penn State Extension website.

The Penn State Master Watershed Steward program provides comprehensive training in watershed management to volunteers who, in turn, educate the community on watershed management based on university research and recommendations. The program was created to build local capacity for managing and protecting watersheds, streams and rivers by training and empowering volunteers across the state.
