San Diego Padres star Manny Machado called out Los Angeles Dodgers starter Jack Flaherty after he hit Fernando Tatis Jr. with a pitch during Sunday night’s National League Division Series clash.

“He was trying to hit our best hitter,” Machado said, per AJ Cassavell of MLB.com.

“If you can’t get him out, don’t hit him, right? You have the best player in the game, right? Ohtani? We’re not going to go out and try to beat Ohtani,” he said. “We’re trying to get him out.”

With the Dodgers trailing 3-1 early in the sixth inning, Tatis was hit by a pitch. Machado later stood out in the frame, but subsequently traded with Flaherty.

The Padres eventually pulled away and won with a final score of 10-2, ending the series in a 1-1 tie.

Tatis singled Flaherty before being hit by the pitch and hit a solo home run in the first inning. In the third inning, he recorded his second straight extra-base hit of the day, a one-out double.

“There’s too much of an important series to just throw it at the guys,” Tatis said after the game, via Mark Sheldon of MLB.com. “I understand that. That’s what my baseball IQ tells me. When he hit me, he just gave me more energy. My boys gave me more energy.”

Flaherty, who finished the game with five hits and four earned runs allowed in 5.1 innings, denied intentionally hitting Tatis.

“Look, I missed in the first inning and threw the ball over the middle,” Flaherty explained, according to Sheldon. “I wasn’t planning on missing the ball again. I have no reason to meet a guy there to start the sixth.”

“I try for effect and he didn’t move out of the way and it hit him,” Flaherty added.

Tatis still showed his power against the Dodgers’ bullpen, hitting his second home run of the day in the ninth inning. The Padres finished the game with six home runs, setting an MLB postseason record.

The series between the NL West rivals now heads back to San Diego for two contests at Petco Park. Game 3 takes place on Tuesday at 9:08 p.m. ET.
