Man trapped in tree in Bel Air rescued by firefighters

BEL AIR, MD — A man was rescued by firefighters Wednesday after he became trapped 30 feet in a tree in Bel Air, authorities said.

Around 10 a.m. Wednesday, multiple fire and police units responded to a home on Gunston Road in Bel Air after receiving a call about an injured person, Harford County Fire & EMS said in a news release.

When authorities arrived, they found a man in a tree trapped in a 20-foot branch that he was sawing off.

Maryland State Police and the Shock Trauma Go Team were called to assist with rescue efforts, authorities said. Since there was no solid ground to access the tree, authorities turned to a neighboring farm to utilize the owner’s hydraulic lift.

“The lift was used to lift part of the tree off the patient while rescuers worked on a plan to get him down,” authorities said.

After a path was cleared, an aerial ladder truck reached the man with his ladder. The man suffered minor injuries and was able to climb down the ladder under his own power, authorities said.

The Maryland Office of Occupational Safety and Health is investigating the incident.
