Man suspected of attacking multiple women on hiking trails in Madera County arrested

MADERA COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) — The Madera County Sheriff’s Department has announced the arrest of a man in connection with several violent attacks on women on hiking trails in recent months.

Investigators have identified the man as 36-year-old Victor Hugo Valencia Reyes.

In June, Madera County Sheriff’s officials investigated two separate incidents in which Reyes attempted to kidnap women hiking along the Granada Trail.

The first attack occurred on Saturday, June 15. The victim reported that Reyes approached her and claimed he had a gun. She said he forced her into a nearby orchard and tied her hands together. She was able to escape and call 911.

The second attack occurred on Wednesday, June 26. In that case, officials say, Reyes tried to put something in a woman’s mouth while trying to restrain her. She, too, was able to escape, but they say Reyes took the woman’s car keys and wireless headphones.

Based on the descriptions of the suspects in both cases, deputies concluded that the two incidents were related. The Sheriff’s Department conducted 13 undercover operations.

The most recent incident occurred last Saturday, August 3. Madera police responded to the Fresno River Trail shortly after 9 p.m. because a man, now identified as Reyes, pepper-sprayed a woman walking in the area. The woman was able to escape.

Through the police investigation, investigators were able to locate an apartment on K Street in the city of Madera.

Search warrants were issued and investigators found items linking Reyes to the three attacks.

Reyes was arrested and booked into the Madera County Jail on numerous charges, including kidnapping and false imprisonment.

His bail was set at $5 million.
