Man falls from truck bed and is hit by trailer, South Carolina coroner says

A man died Friday when he fell from the back of a truck and was struck by the trailer the vehicle was pulling, according to the Aiken County Coroner’s Office.

The incident occurred around 4 p.m. in the 6000 block of Northside Drive, Coroner Darryl Ables said in a news release. That’s in North Augusta, in the area between Interstate 520 and U.S. 78.

The man was sitting in the back of a truck when he fell and was run over, the news release said. Information about what the man was doing on the truck and what caused his fall was not available.

Emergency services took the victim from South Carolina across the state line to WellStar MCG Hospital in Augusta, Georgia, where he died shortly after 5 p.m., the coroner’s office said.

Ables said he was waiting to notify the man’s family before releasing his name.

Both the coroner’s office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol are investigating the death. An autopsy will be performed in Newberry, Ables said.

Through Aug. 4, at least 534 people will die on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, the department reported.

According to DPS data, at least 21 people died in crashes in Aiken County in 2024. In 2023, 38 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
