According to police, the shooting appears to be a domestic incident. They added that they are not looking for a suspect and that there is no ongoing threat to the community as a result of the incident.

While police have not yet confirmed the relationship between the two people involved, it is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Robin Gauthier of Samaritan House said when abuse leads to extreme violence, it’s often because someone wants to control you.

It can start slowly with verbal abuse and then escalate to physical violence.

“One of the precursors to death by gun is choking a victim, trying to silence them or impairing their ability to be courageous, so all of those can be signs that a victim is in a situation,” Gauthier said .

If you may be experiencing domestic violence, you can call the Samaritan House hotline at 757-430-2120.

You can also call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-(800) 799-7233.
