Man dies when vacuum truck hits power lines in Macomb County

A vacuum truck in Macomb County collided with power lines in the north of the county, sparking a fire that charred the cab of the truck. Authorities confirmed that one man died.

FOX 2 has learned the victim was a DTE Energy contractor. The Macomb County Sheriff said he was called to the fire on Romeo Plank at 32 Mile Road just after 1 p.m. Thursday. The driver, a 61-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“It is with a heavy heart that we confirm that a contractor lost an employee while working for DTE today. The individual, who was working in Macomb County, came into contact with overhead equipment and was fatally injured.

“We send our love and support to his family and loved ones. Our teams are currently on site working with first responders and local authorities to assist with the investigation.”

The vehicle is a Vacall vacuum truck. Vacall uses a boom arm to clean sewers and catch basins. The boom arm of the vehicle was extended and appeared to have come into contact with power lines. This caused a fire that set the driver’s cabin on fire.

DTE is on site and an electric truck appears to have used its bucket and boom to lift the cables.

Powell Road reopened at 10pm this evening.

FOX 2 is working to find out more about the incident and what happened.
