Malik Nabers remains in the concussion protocol and will be out against the Seahawks

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – The New York Giants will be without rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers because of a concussion when they travel to play the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, coach Brian Daboll said Friday.

The Giants are also unlikely to have starting running back Devin Singletary (groin) available as he was listed as questionable, although he returned to practice on Friday as a limited participant and said he was “feeling better.” .

Nabers is still battling a concussion he suffered in last Thursday’s loss to the Dallas Cowboys. The No. 6 overall pick in this year’s draft leads the Giants with 35 receptions for 386 yards and three touchdowns.

“We’re not going to travel him (to Seattle),” Daboll said. “(We) keep him at home. He will be inside (Friday). He is making progress, but we will do everything we can to get him as healthy and healthy as possible.”

Nabers’ absence creates an opportunity for Jalin Hyatt, a third-round pick last year. More will also be asked of Darius Slayton, who will likely slide into Nabers’ position, and slot receiver Wan’Dale Robinson, who is second on the team with 38 targets.

Expectations had risen for Hyatt after the Giants traded for him and he starred as a rookie. But Hyatt has just three targets and zero catches in limited playing time this season.

“I’m a competitor,” said Hyatt, who was frustrated when Slayton beat him out for the No. 2 wide receiver spot this summer. “I want to be able to go out there and play, and obviously I haven’t had many chances this season.”

“But like I said, it’s a long season. Things happen, injuries happen, and I have to be ready, I have to be ready whenever my number is called. And when it’s called upon this week, I’ll be ready.”

The Giants have relied heavily on Nabers this season. He averages 13 goals per game and is the Giants’ top target in every game. He accounted for 44% of their receiving yards and 50% of their total touchdowns.

If the Giants don’t face Nabers and Singletary on Sunday, they will be without 57% of their offense and 83% of their touchdowns this season.

Daboll said Wednesday that Nabers is in the “early stages” of concussion protocol. That made it difficult to get approval before the end of the week, although he has made progress. If he had a few more days, there was a chance he could get through the protocol.

“We will always do the right thing. We take these concussions very seriously and he has progressed, but not to the point where he can go out and play,” Daboll said. “But his safety, his well-being comes first.”

The Giants host the Cincinnati Bengals on October 13th at MetLife Stadium. The hope is that Nabers will be back for this game.

His absence will make life more difficult for quarterback Daniel Jones, who developed instant chemistry with the rookie wide receiver.

“There is no doubt that he has been an important part of our offense so far and someone we have counted on in many areas. So it’s going to change a little bit,” Jones said. “But the guys we have out there, we have a lot of confidence in them winning their matches and leading a deep group of receivers and a lot of talented guys.”
