Mainer sues monster truck tour after she and her son injured in Topsham accident

A Fryeburg woman has sued the owners of the Renegade Monster Truck Tour, the driver of the Crushstation monster truck and the owner of the Topsham Fairgrounds after an accident at the event earlier this summer injured several spectators, including herself and her minor son.

The lawsuit, filed in June by Carly Kobs, seeks damages from Rettew Motorsports LLC, owner of the Renegade Monster Truck Tour, Crushstation driver Gregory Winchenbach and the Sagadahoc Agricultural and Horticultural Society, which owns the fairgrounds.

According to West Bath District Court records, no court date has yet been set for the civil case.

No criminal charges were filed against the owner of the Renegade Monster Truck Tour in June following the accident in which the Crushstation on the track jumped and struck a power line, knocking down two power poles and injuring several spectators at the June 1 monster truck rally.

Two people were taken to the hospital, one to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick and the other to Maine Medical Center in Portland. Several others were treated for minor injuries at the Topsham Fairgrounds.

The lawsuit alleges that Renegade failed to adequately warn participants about the dangers associated with the monster truck tour and allowed employees to negligently operate Crushstation’s monster truck.

The lawsuit also accuses the Sagadahoc Agricultural and Horticultural Society of negligence for failing to take reasonable steps to oversee the safe operation and use of the Topsham Fairgrounds and for allowing Renegade to use the site in an inappropriate and dangerous manner.

Renegade Monster Truck owner Zane Rettew did not respond to requests for comment and the Sagadahoc Agricultural and Horticultural Society declined to comment on the lawsuit.
