LSU women’s basketball player Sa’Myah Smith is officially allowed to play

BATON ROUGE – Kim Mulkey and the LSU women’s basketball team received good news Saturday.

According to an Instagram story on LSU point guard Last-Tear Poa’s page, forward Sa’Myah Smith is officially cleared to play basketball again. Smith, who is entering her third season with the Tigers, missed most of the 2023-24 season after suffering a season-ending knee injury last November.

In addition to Smith, the video also features Amanda Barbee, LSU’s assistant athletic trainer, who says her doctor gave her the green light.

It took Smith only about nine months to fully recover from the torn ACL and medial ligament she suffered during LSU’s game against Niagara in the Cayman Islands Classic.

Getting the 6-foot-2 redshirt sophomore forward back before the start of preseason and the start of the 2024-25 season is huge for LSU, which opens the year against Eastern Kentucky on Nov. 4. The Tigers are a bit thin at the bottom position, with only three players, including Smith, having seen any significant playing time in their careers.

Center Aalyah Del Rosario saw a lot of playing time in some spots during her freshman season last year, including in the recent NCAA tournament, while Jersey Wolfenbarger, who transferred from Arkansas, played a few seasons in the SEC.

Smith brings a ton of skill and much-needed experience and knowledge of Mulkey’s system. She was named an SEC All-Freshman selection two seasons ago.

Before her season-ending injury last November, she was off to a great start in her sophomore season, averaging 11.7 points and 7.6 rebounds. Her absence created a bit of an interior defense problem for LSU, and the original plan Mulkey had for Aneesah Morrow had to be changed.
