Austin Wells goes deep right! The ball is gone! And out of absolutely nowhere, the Yankees catcher bursts into flames! This is a huge success for New York!

Dodgers 4-5 Yankees, top 6

Holmes roars into the sixth! Muncy strikes, then Hernandez sniffs. Two points less for Lux, who ends up in second place. Easy 1-2-3 inning for the Yankees!

Dodgers 4-5 Yankees, bottom 5

Volpe jumps into the middle – it’s a can of corn. Side retired. So New York misses a chance to score, leaving two goals left in the fifth period. Remember!

Rizzo innocently jumps into midfield for the second time. So now Knack has a chance to escape this inning, but first he has to face Volpe, who hit that grand slam last time out.

Knack is back and so is Judge, who hits a routine ground ball to short Edman’s boot! He recovers and throws, but it’s not in time, so the Yankees have a leadoff runner for Chisholm!

Will New York respond to LA’s split fifth?

Hernandez swings at the first pitch and pops out to right. He swings his bat angrily as he makes his way to the dugout. The inning is over, but LA scored two within one run to tie the score.

RUN! Dodgers 4-5 Yankees, top 5

The call is overturned and the Dodgers are now just one run away!

That’s it for Hill, who walks to the plate with Teoscar Hernandez. Former Yankees closer Clay Holmes, demoted in favor of Luke Weaver, enters.

Dodgers 3-5 Yankees, top 5

Betts hits a bouncer to second base. Torres throws to Volpe for an out at second base. A down and runner on the corners for Freddie Freeeman.

He also jumps to second place – can New York finish second? Torres throws to Volpe for the first time, but the first throw seems to be too late! The referee calls him out, but LA will challenge. If LA wins the challenge, Ohtani scores and it becomes a one-run game!

So Hill has to prevent that walk from scoring, which is very difficult.

And Ohtani actually brings the first throw into the middle. that’s a base hit!

Betts is now two players ahead. Dangerous times for New York.

Dodgers 3-5 Yankees, top 5

Gil goes against Edman, which is exactly what you can’t do against this team. You can’t accompany anyone at the back of the lineup if Ohtani and Co. are waiting at the top.

Boone comes out and grabs Gil, who looked good until he gave up a routine pop-up home run and a walk. Here comes Tim Hill, one of the best players on the Yankees team, facing Ohtani.

HOME RUN! Dodgers 3-5 Yankees, top 5

Smith hits a home run into the short porch in right field, which in LA is probably a shallow pop-up. But the Dodgers will do it! The lead is now only two!

Smith was totally due, but that’s such cheap HR. Still, it could help him move forward.

Dodgers 2-5 Yankees, bottom 4

Soto ends up in second place. Inning over.

Dodgers 2-5 Yankees, bottom 4

So Knack, part of a bullpen game for LA designed to get the Dodgers through a game without using their best relievers, puts Torres on a 4-6-3 double play. That means the bases are empty for Juan Soto, which is just how an LA fan likes it.

Dodgers 2-5 Yankees, bottom 4

This finally puts the Yankees in a position where they don’t have to overcome a deficit for the first time since this series began on Friday. That was a long time ago! And now Verdugo opens with a base hit to right over new pitcher Landon Knack.

And here comes the top of the Yankees lineup.

It’s high, it’s wide…

It’s actually a strike, so Stanton is 1-2 on the hole.

Hudson shoots first to stop Chisholm, much to the chagrin of the lively Yankees crowd.

Now Chisholm takes off to second base – no throw!

Second and third, with one out! It’s now a full count for Stanton!

Dodgers 2-1 Yankees, last third

Now Stanton is hit! Right at your fingertips! But he was swinging on the pitch, so that should be a hit!

Soto can’t find Hudson’s low slider. That’s strike three and the first out.

Then Hudson slaps Judge right on the wrist, as if he didn’t have enough problems already! that was disgusting! But it means Judge doesn’t throw punches, so that’s progress.

An out base runner here for Chisholm.

Dodgers 2-0 Yankees, bottom

Wells hits a long, deep drive to midfield! Is that out? No, it’s from the top wall! Volpe got it wrong and doesn’t score from second with a double! How is that possible? Are you kidding me?

Wow!

OK, so second and third, one out, and here’s Verdugo, who hit a garbage-time home run in the ninth inning last night.

Dodgers 2-0 Yankees, bottom

Wells, of course, is behind in the count. Casparius throws first to control Volpe, who goes first.

Now he delivers and Wells shoots the ball out, out of play behind home plate – that’s a foul and out of the game.

Then Volpe takes off on the next pitch! It’s a good jump and the Yankee shortstop slides in safely! So New York has a third runner in scoring position!

Dodgers 2-0 Yankees, bottom

Volpe goes for a walk. The problem is that Wells is next and he hasn’t thrown a single shot in a long time. What is now?
