Looking for a last minute costume? Here’s what you’ll see on the streets this Halloween

Halloween is just around the corner. Like most years, October 31st is closer than it seems, and chances are good that you’ve been putting off costume planning as much as studying. Although there’s only a little time left, here are my predictions for some of the most popular Halloween costumes this year – maybe you can get a few ideas while you raid your closet for a last minute costume!

Pop stars (especially Sabrina Carpenter)

While you’re hopefully not working, you’ll probably be staying up late… so why not become a singer?

With the release of her album this year and the success of her tour, Sabrina Carpenter’s signature “Short n’ Sweet” look—sparkly minidresses, sweetheart corsets, fluffy hair, and knee-high boots—will undoubtedly be one many want to emulate this Halloween.

I also expect there will be at least a few Chappell Roans walking the streets this Hello weekend as the artist is becoming more and more well-known this year. Some may choose to recreate a not-so-casual look or one of her recognizable concert outfits with a bodysuit and bold makeup. Additionally, with the continued success of her “Eras Tour,” I believe we’ll continue to see multiple Taylor Swifts in outfits drawn from all eras of her album—from cowboy boots to sparkly bodysuits—and maybe even some pairs like Taylor and Kansas City Chiefs end Travis Kelce.

The Wizard of Oz (and other classic groups)

As usual, we will continue to see a variety of group costumes. “Alice in Wonderland,” “Strawberry Shortcake,” and “Toy Story” are among those that have become more popular to me through discussions with peers and on social media. The Wonderland groups will likely include variations on the protagonist’s signature blue dress, top hats and mismatched clothing for the Mad Hatter, and stopwatches that reference the White Rabbit’s obsession with time. Strawberry Shortcake and her friends will likely be recognizable by their striped tights, dessert iconography, and color-coordinated outfits. “Toy Story” characters may be seen wearing cowboy hats, space ranger wings or hoods.

With the movie “Wicked” coming out this November, I expect “Wizard of Oz” costumes to be particularly popular. Look for Dorothy’s blue gingham dress and magical red shoes, Elphaba in her traditional witch attire, and Glinda in a puffy pink dress – probably shortened for comfort.

From the inside out

This weekend we may see plenty of emotions on the streets, with some groups opting to portray characters from last summer’s hugely successful Inside Out 2. Costumes will likely vary. Some groups may stay true to each character’s movie outfit, but I expect the majority will opt for more conceptual costumes, based on a character’s signature color and wearing a few key accessories – glasses for sadness, a tie for sadness Anger or the unruly hair of fear.

Olympians

The 2024 Olympics have been the talk of the town this summer. As always, watching and supporting the athletes was spectacular, but this year’s Games also led to a proliferation of memes that made certain moments and athletes more memorable. Some of the notable athletes we’ll see this Halloween include Australian breakdancer Rachael “Raygun” Gunn with her unconventional but unforgettable dance moves; Turkish sniper Yusuf Dikeç, who many joked was a retired killer; and U.S. gymnast Stephen Nedoroscik, known as the “pommel horse guy.”

Tashi, Art and Patrick (Challengers)

Other athletes we could see include the fictional Art, Tashi Donaldson and Patrick Zweig from “Challengers.” Luca Guadagnino’s film was one of this summer’s most popular, and the characters – and their iconic love triangle – continue to be widely talked about. Some students may choose to wear one of Tashi’s signature blue mini dresses or Art and Patrick’s dressier attire, but I expect many will opt for tennis gear for a more recognizable look. Even as a last-minute idea, the sporty variant should be relatively easy to implement.
