Local rugby teams are at the forefront of growth in the sport

Rugby has long been a popular sport in the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand, but recently the sport has gained popularity in the United States as well.

CNY RUGBY coach Patrick Scully said the success of the U.S. women’s rugby team at the Olympics helped increase interest in the sport.

“Rugby is experiencing a huge resurgence in the United States right now. It’s one of the fastest growing sports in the country. Here in Syracuse alone, we have flag rugby for kids in grades 4-6. We have a middle school team and a high school team for boys and girls,” he said.

Lorelei Bock plays for the Syracuse Silver Hawks, the only women’s rugby team in Central New York. She is one of a growing number of women who have taken up rugby. She said the sport welcomes newcomers, no matter how much experience they have.

“Everyone is so nice. You tackle someone in one game and fifteen minutes later you’re sitting with them eating dinner.”

Robert Felix, a player for the Syracuse Silver Backs, said virtually anyone who wants to play rugby can find a position on the field.

In basketball you have to be big, in football you have to be strong. There are all kinds of categories you have to fit into, but in rugby you can be anything.
