LIVE: Protest at scene of fatal DC police shooting after release of bodycam footage

On Wednesday night, a crowd of protesters gathered in Southeast DC demanding justice after violence interrupter Justin Robinson was shot and killed by two DC police officers.

Due to increasing tensions between officials and the public, the demonstration resulted in road closures, including Alabama Avenue.

The protest, which began around 7:30 p.m. with a small group of about a dozen people, quickly grew to over 100 people.

Protesters marched from the 7th Precinct police station to a nearby McDonald’s on Marion Barry Avenue, where the fatal shooting took place over a week ago.

The protesters chanted slogans such as “No justice, no peace” and “Arrest the police” as they encountered police officers stationed behind barricades.

Body camera footage released by police shows Robinson, unconscious in his car after the McDonald’s crash, allegedly trying to grab a police officer’s gun through a window before he was shot.

The officials involved are currently on leave.

The footage has caused outrage among many community members, with some expressing disbelief and sadness.

“It was devastating – they didn’t care, they didn’t try to wake him up,” said Chartia Williams, a Ward 8 resident.

Police have stated that as the investigation progresses, they will continue to increase visibility and presence throughout the city, particularly in the 7th District.
