Lions WR Jameson Williams faces concealed weapons charges

Embattled Lions receiver Jameson Williams is dealing with another problem.

Williams is currently serving a two-game PED suspension and is charged with carrying a concealed weapon in a motor vehicle.

Via WXYZ.com, the Detroit Police Department is investigating why Williams was not formally arrested at the time of the incident.

On Oct. 8, Williams was a passenger in a car his brother was driving. The vehicle was stopped for speeding. There were two guns in the car; one was registered to Williams’ brother and one to Williams.

Williams’ brother had a concealed handgun license, but Williams did not.

Body camera footage shows Williams repeatedly telling the officer that he plays for the Lions. Finally, Williams said this: “I got the gun for protection. Do you know where I live? Detroit!”

Williams was handcuffed and placed in the back seat of a patrol car. After a supervisor arrived on the scene (a sergeant whose cell phone background displayed a Lions logo), calls were made and Williams was eventually released. The sergeant can be heard telling the arresting officers, “I’m so mad at you two.”

The Lions issued a statement to WXYZ on Tuesday: “Jameson immediately brought to our attention that he was a passenger in a routine traffic stop on October 8th. We discussed the incident with him and kept the league updated on our findings. We believe he was released without incident or citation. Based on our current knowledge, the Detroit Police Department is reviewing the matter. Jameson has retained an attorney and we will have no further comment out of respect for the legal process.”

Williams will face both criminal prosecution by authorities and possible suspension by the league.

Last year, Williams was suspended for violating the league’s gambling policy.
