Lions player Jake Bates ignores preseason inconsistency against Rams

Detroit — Detroit Lions kicker Jake Bates is no superhuman.

He can’t choose what he remembers or what goes through his mind in critical situations. Athletes often talk about having a bad memory, but no one can really turn off their brain. Some are better at focusing when under pressure than others, but the back of their mind still exists, whether they want to admit it or not.

So what was Bates thinking when he lined up for a 32-yard field goal to send the Lions into overtime against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday night? Was he thinking about his missed shots throughout training camp? Or more specifically, what about the 30-yard field goal he missed in the final preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers — which, by the way, went in the same direction at Ford Field?

“I’m only human,” Bates said after Sunday’s season-opening win over the Rams. “I know I missed the kick. But I also think you have to tell yourself that you can’t always be as perfect as you’d like to be. That’s because of the position, the ups and downs of being a kicker. You’re going to miss some, you’re going to hit some. How do you stay as balanced as possible with all the ups and downs?”

Bates sank his attempt against Los Angeles. Right down the middle. No give, no last-minute turn. With 17 seconds left, there was no question as to whether he would tie the game or not, paving the way for the Lions to run down the field in overtime and score the winning touchdown.

It was a cold-blooded kick in front of 66,530 fans that would have been poisonous if he had missed.

“I’m just doing my job,” Bates said of his mindset. “I know (long snapper) Hogan (Hatten) and (holder) Jack (Fox) are going to put me in the best position possible to shoot the ball through. At this point, it’s just doing my job. We’ve been practicing really hard. The coaches have done a really good job during training camp and practice putting us in these situations, so it’s just going out there, doing your job and hoping the ball goes through the goal posts.”

Bates, who received a game ball from Fox, said he couldn’t remember if his heart rate increased as he jogged onto the field for the kickoff on Sunday night, but he was pretty sure his mother did: “She said she was getting older a little too fast because my little brother and I play football,” he added.

The Lions have followed Bates through the ups and downs of his young career, which resulted from his outstanding performance as a member of the Michigan Panthers of the United Football League. Bates made 17 of his 22 field goals with the Panthers, including three hits from 55 yards or more.

Bates, who has played in just one regular-season game, will experience another setback. As he keeps telling himself, no one is perfect. Kickers will miss, and that’s OK. It doesn’t have to affect his mentality.

“I’m always ready, absolutely,” Bates said. “I know we have a really, really good offense that’s going to give us a lot of room. And then we have one of the best punters in the NFL that’s going to drive them deep. I’m always ready to go. I’m just waiting for my number to be called.”

“Whenever required, go out and do your job.”
