Liberty’s Sabrina Ionescu was silenced by Aces in Game 3 loss

Sabrina Ionescu got what she wanted in the first two games in Brooklyn, but she wants what happened Friday night in Las Vegas to stay in Vegas.

The All-Star guard was overrun by opposing defenders and endured a tumultuous shooting night, scoring just four points in the Liberty’s 95-81 Game 3 road loss to the Aces.

Ionescu averaged 24.5 points in her first four playoff appearances – including 24 in a win in Game 2 of that series – but didn’t escape the Liberty’s first loss of the postseason.

She missed six of seven field goal attempts, committed five turnovers and finished the game minus-23 in 30 minutes.

“She played great, so obviously they want to make it difficult for her, and I think they did,” Liberty coach Sandy Brondello said. “She has to continue to trust it. We get the ball back to her and make the (shots) that are open. She missed some open tasks that she normally does, but sometimes teams speed you up.”

Aces guard Chelsea Gray said the key against Ionescu was “our attention to detail in the pick-and-roll and just making sure she wasn’t comfortable.”

Vegas coach Becky Hammon also said it was about “making Sabrina uncomfortable and preventing her from going downhill” and into the paint.

“A plus, great job,” Hammon added when asked how that worked out.

In fact, Ionescu was shut out and shut out for the first three quarters.

She only scored a goal nine minutes before the end of the game.

“She’ll be fine,” Brondello said. “She’s a competitor, she’ll take this lightly and be ready to play in the next game (on Sunday).”
