ANNAPOLIS, Maryland – Liberty and Cornell battled through the first two hard-fought sets before the Big Red defeated the Lady Flames 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-18) on Friday at Navy’s Wesley A. Brown Field House.

Cornell (1-0) opened its season with a win today, while the Lady Flames (2-2) played a 1-1 tie at the Kristen Dickmann Invitational this weekend. Liberty defeated Navy last night thanks to a season-high 15 aces.



Remarkable figures

  • Cornell outscored Liberty in the game, .280-.127, and also led in kills (45-34), assists (42-33), aces (5-3) and digs (37-33). Both teams posted 11 blocks.
  • The Big Red have three players with double-digit kill totals, led by Eliza Konvicka, who had the most kills of the game with 16 kills. Haley Clark recorded 11 kills and four aces, the most of the game, as well as three blocks, while Jaida Sione recorded 10 kills. Doga Ozalp provided 38 assists, the most of the game, while Camryn Carlo recorded six blocks.
  • Liberty newbies Carly O’Brien And Paige Overcash with six kills each, tied with the team leader. Classmate Charlie Crowson distributed 13 assists, most of his teams, while Madison Blaine contributed seven blocks, most of the game. Erica Lowery collected 16 digs, the most of the game.

Turning point

  • Liberty used a 3-0 run to erase a 23-20 deficit late in the first set. Charlie MorrisMadison Blaine Block. Kills from Clark and Konvicka gave Cornell a narrow 25-23 win.
  • The Lady Flames took a 22-21 lead in the second set after a kill by Morris. The Big Red then closed the set with a 4-0 run to secure a 2-0 lead.

Quick hits

  • Cornell now leads the all-time series with Liberty in volleyball, 2-1. The Lady Flames won the last meeting before today, 3-1, on September 12, 2008. The Big Red defeated Liberty for the first time since September 11, 1993, a game in Syracuse, NY.
  • Blane totaled 15 blocks this week in Annapolis. With 311 blocks in his career, Blane needs eight more blocks to pass Ashley Webber (2005-08) for 10.th in the program’s history in career blocks.
