Less than five years ago, Megyn Kelly was the heroine of a Hollywood film

If you want to see a movie that has not aged well, I give you bombthe 2019 drama that dramatized the sexual harassment scandal that led to the ouster of Roger Ailes, the longtime head of Fox News.

The film was released during the 2019 awards season, unusually soon after the real-life events; Ailes resigned from Fox in the summer of 2016 and died in early 2017.

The film starred Nicole Kidman as Gretchen Carlson, the Fox news anchor whose lawsuit against Ailes (played by John Lithgow in the film) sparked the scandal, and Margot Robbie as a fictional Fox News employee.

But bombThe main story of was that of Megyn Kelly, played by Charlize Theron. Kelly, a then-news anchor at Fox News, is shown in the film being insulted by Donald Trump during and after a presidential debate, after which her bosses at Fox effectively take Trump’s side to their own staff. Kelly later reveals that she herself was harassed by Ailes and helps organize other women at the network who are also being bullied by their boss.

bomb is not a particularly successful film; it was not a huge box office hit and did not make a big splash at the Oscars. Theron and Robbie were both nominated in the acting category, but won for best makeup and hair (for Kazu Hiro, Anne Morgan and Vivian Baker). The loudest voice, The Showtime miniseries that came out the previous summer – starring Russell Crowe as Ailes – was a better version of the same story.

But what is so fascinating about bomb is that it’s a film made by Hollywood liberals, aimed at a liberal audience, and it casts people like Fox News, Roger Ailes, Donald Trump, and certain Fox employees who rose to prominence during the Trump era, like Kimberly Guilfoyle and Jeanine Pirro, as belligerent villains. And against them, as the heroine and surrogate of the audience, it positions… Megyn Kelly.
