Less light as we say goodnight to sunsets after 6pm this week

STATEN ISLAND, NY – The last sunset at 6 p.m. until 2025 is just around the corner.

I feel sorry for those mourning the dwindling hours of sunshine – there are only six days left with sunsets at 6pm or later.

According to Almanac.com, Saturday, October 26th will be the last sunset at 6 p.m. in 2024.

On Sunday, October 27th, the sun will set at 5:59 p.m

Cue tears and the theme song “Game of Thrones” for the winter Is Come.

On November 3rd, clocks will go back as Daylight Saving Time ends, reducing our sunlight by an hour and pushing sunsets to the 4 p.m. range.

The days are getting shorter as we get closer to the winter solstice on December 21st, the longest night of the year. In the almanac, the sun rises at 7:15 a.m. and sets at 4:33 p.m. – that’s just nine hours and 18 minutes of light.

But after the solstice passes, light will slowly return as we move away from the dark depths of the winter months.

Daylight saving time begins again on March 9, 2025, drastically increasing the amount of sun we will experience. On that fateful day, the sun rose at 7:15 a.m. and did not set until 6:57 p.m

In comparison, on March 8, 2025, the sun will rise at 6:16 a.m. and set at 5:56 p.m

Why we use Daylight Saving Time is as follows: If we set the clocks forward one hour in the spring, we get more daylight on summer evenings, while in the fall, we set the clocks back one hour to get more daylight on winter mornings, they say Farmer’s Almanac.

Hold on tight, Staten Island – the darkness may come, but the light will always follow.
