Lee Carsley’s stupid decision backfires as Greece secures historic victory over England

England interim coach Lee Carsley was made a fool of for not using a striker after Greece’s famous 2-1 win at Wembley.

The Three Lions were outclassed as Carsley got his tactics all wrong and Greece had the ball in the net five times – with three ruled out for offside.

Vangelis Pavlidis scored the visitors’ first goal shortly after half-time before pulling out a George Baldock shirt in a touching tribute to the 31-year-old who died on Wednesday.

Greece continued to apply pressure throughout the competition as England’s defense was often crowded and unable to cope with the press.

Only the linesman saved England from further embarrassment as the Greeks ran away in anger after three goals were ruled out for offside.

Carsley had decided not to use a striker because Harry Kane was out due to injury.

And after Greece took the lead, he scuppered his plans by bringing in Ollie Watkins and Dominic Solanke as quickly as possible.

The change in tactics resulted in Jude Bellingham scoring a direct goal – his first goal since his winner against Slovakia at the European Championships.

But it meant little as Greece once again used a high press to take over the faltering English defense and scored the winner again in the 94th minute through Pavlidis.

It drove Greek fans at Wembley crazy, who had been chanting throughout the competition after turning up in droves.

England, on the other hand, cannot complain about their opponents after such a poor performance as they only managed two shots on target.

This was despite the wealth of attacking talent Carsley had fielded – Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka, Anthony Gordon and Bellingham.

But with so many players all operating in similar positions, they all ended up in their own way and many attacks ended in chaos.

However, Greece looked determined and determined – pressing when they needed to and winning the ball while punishing England’s poor passing from the back.

They scored two goals in such attacks, but were then ruled out for offside, but the decisive goal in the end remained on the scoreboard.

It was Flipper in the England penalty area who had plenty of time to deal with the danger and just clear the ball – Rico Lewis and John Stones were guilty – before Pavlidis took control and fired past Jordan Pickford.

England could have topped their Nations League group but will now likely need a win to gain automatic promotion.
