Learn about the tax issues on the ballot in Portage County.

Three Portage County school districts and Portage County Children’s Services will request additional funding in the November 5 election.

In total, there are 40 ballot issues available for voters in November. Wednesday was the deadline to register for the issues on the Ohio general election ballot. Although Wednesday was also the deadline for candidates to register, these races were decided in the spring primary election.

Aurora, Mogadore and Ravenna school districts will request new funding in November. Voters rejected levies in Mogadore and Ravenna in May. Those levies were the same ones voters rejected in November 2023.

Aurora, which is lobbying residents to support the district’s building plan, is seeking a $7.56 million bond issue that would raise more than $136 million, or $265 per year for every $100,000 of property value. The plan calls for building a new high school and housing younger students in existing buildings within the district.

The remaining buildings – Harmon, Leighton and Miller – would house elementary students. Harmon, the former middle school, would become a high school for grades three through five. Leighton, the current high school, would become an elementary school building for grades one and two and would also house the district’s preschool. Miller, which now houses preschool and kindergarten, would become a kindergarten building.

Ravenna, which the state auditor put in budget trouble after three consecutive tax failures, will seek a tax of 8.31 per thousand, more than the 6.9 per thousand the county had previously asked for. The tax would raise $3.25 million annually and cost $291 per year per $100,000 of home value.

Mogadore is seeking a 5.9 percent tax, the same tax voters previously rejected. It would raise $743,000 a year and cost $207 a year per $100,000 of home value.

Portage County Job & Family Services wants to replace two levies, one at 0.75 per thousand and the other at 0.49 per thousand, and combine them into a total of 1.245 per thousand. The levy would raise $5.736 million annually for the care, placement and treatment of abused, neglected and needy children. The cost would be $42 annually for a property valued at $100,000.

The Stow-Munroe Falls School District, which overlaps with Portage County, is also seeking an $8.89 million bond issue for elementary and middle school buildings in the district. The levy would cost $291 per year per $100,000 of home value. It would raise $238 million.

Other issues facing Portage County voters in November:

  • Community EMS in Garrettsville is seeking a 2 per thousand levy that would generate $400,000 per year. The levy would cost $70 per year per $100,000 of home value.
  • Charlestown is seeking a 5-mill levy for fire and emergency services. The levy would raise $139,000 annually and cost $175 per year per $100,000 of home value. The township is also seeking to renew a 1.5-mill levy for fire and emergency services that would raise $17,000 annually. The levy would cost $18 per year per $100,000 of home value.
  • Franklin Township wants to replace the current 3.42 per thousand levy and increase it by 0.08 per thousand, making the property tax 3.5 per thousand. The combined levy would generate $726,000 annually and cost $123 per year per $100,000 of home value.
  • Aurora is seeking 13 changes to its statutes.
  • School renewal levies are being sought in Kent, Atwater, Brimfield and Suffield. Voters in Streetsboro Schools will face two questions about the levy renewal. Voters in the Springfield City School District, which overlaps with Portage County, will also face a renewal levy.
  • Replacement levies will be presented to voters in the Mantua-Shalersville Fire District, Hiram, Rootstown and Tallmadge school districts, which overlap with Portage County.
