Law enforcement agencies update Sturgis Rally crime statistics

RAPID CITY, SD (KOTA) – The South Dakota Highway Patrol reports another fatal crash Tuesday.

According to police, a rider was killed when his Harley-Davidson entered the median on eastbound I-90 near mile marker 161 and overturned, throwing the rider from his motorcycle.

Sturgis police said they made 11 drug-related arrests and eight drug-related felony arrests from Tuesday morning through Wednesday morning.

The total number of both so far in the rally is almost the same as last year.

Meade County Sheriff Pat West says the majority of arrests last night were for drunk driving cases.

He says there is a lot of work to be done at the Meade County Jail.

“Forty-eight people were booked into the jail, for a total of 247 for the week. Again, we’re trying to send them out the back door when they come in. Our current incarceration count is about 90, so we’re keeping it that way,” said Pat West, sheriff of the Meade County Sheriff’s Office.

Sturgis Police Chief Geoddy Vandewater added that there have been no suspected human trafficking incidents at the rally so far.

According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, there were a total of 48 motorcycle accidents in the county during the rally through 6 a.m. Wednesday morning.
