Airplane spirals out of the sky and crashes into Brazilian mountainside

According to government officials, a plane with 62 people on board crashed near the Brazilian state of São Paulo on Friday afternoon. All passengers were killed.

VoePass Flight 2283 took off from Cascavel in the state of Parana to Sao Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport shortly before noon. The ATR-72 lost signal at around 1:30 a.m. local time and crashed in Vinhedo, 50 miles northwest of Sao Paulo.

The aircraft carried 58 passengers and four crew members.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva spoke about the crash shortly after the plane crashed.

“I want everyone to stand up so we can observe a minute of silence,” Silva said in a speech.

Brazilian television station GloboNews showed video footage that appeared to show the plane going into a nosedive, then disappearing behind a group of trees before a large cloud of black smoke rose into the air.

The plane hit several houses, Brazilian civil defense told CNN.

Later photographs showed a large area of ​​fire and smoke rising from the aircraft.
