The plane was en route to São Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport, where it was expected to arrive shortly before 2 p.m.

According to flight data, the aircraft lost signal at 1:30 p.m. local time.

A few moments later, the plane began to descend and crashed in a residential area of ​​Vinhedo, 80 kilometers northwest of São Paulo.

The aircraft carried 58 passengers and four crew members.

A local resident told CNN she was eating lunch when Voepass Flight 2283 crashed into her neighborhood.

She described the crash as a “moment of panic” for the city of Vinhedo. She told the newspaper that she crouched down and began to pray when the plane hit near her home.

The plane with 68 people on board hit several houses when it crashed, Brazilian civil defense told CNN.

Footage of the crash shows the plane plummeting vertically and spiraling. The video also shows a large area engulfed in flames after the crash and smoke rising from the plane.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva addressed his country on Friday and informed citizens that there were “apparently” 62 passengers and crew on board VoePass Flight 2283.

“I want everyone to stand up so we can observe a minute’s silence because a plane with 58 passengers and four crew members just crashed in the city of Vinhedo in São Paulo and it seems that everyone has died,” Silva said.

Vinhedo is located 50 miles northwest of the city of Sao Paulo.
