Las Cruces Sun-News welcomes new sports reporter Nick Cappola

Since I started this job on August 5, I have heard countless people tell me that there is not enough sports coverage in this area. If you have read the Sun-News recently, you know that is changing.

My name is Nick Coppola and I’m the new sports reporter for the Las Cruces Sun-News. First, I want to say how excited I am to be here and to be a part of this community. There are a lot of exciting things happening in the state of New Mexico and in high school sports here and I look forward to being the one to share that with all of you.

Second, I want to tell you a little about myself. I grew up in Lubbock, Texas. If you’ve never been there, imagine an island in the middle of nowhere. But instead of oceans, it’s surrounded by vast expanses of empty land. I’ve heard others describe it as their world, and it felt that way, in a good way. Lubbock is the spirit of West Texas. It’s a great college town and a wonderful place to grow up, learn traditional Christian values, and be part of a good community before heading out into the real world. I even interned at the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal for a summer.

In high school, I discovered my talent and passion for writing. Throughout my life, writing has always been the best way for me to express my thoughts, feelings, goals, and motivations. I have also always had a passion for sports. I played football in high school, still watch and consume sports whenever I have free time, and have always been obsessed with learning more about my favorite sports like football, soccer, and basketball and staying up to date on each team and player. I enjoy things outside of sports like traveling, playing guitar, watching movies, and exploring the outdoors, but I knew I wanted to include sports in my future career.

I figured the best way to combine the two was through sports journalism, and that’s what led me to leave home and attend the University of Oklahoma at Norman. The campus was beautiful, the city was a great place to live, and OU has one of America’s best student newspapers, the OU Daily. I wrote for the Daily from 2020-2023, working my way up from a rookie writing about cardboard cutouts to lead sports reporter covering the Women’s College World Series, a variety of Sooners sports, and our high school sports report. For my work, I won two Associated Press Sports Editors awards in 2022 and 2023, and am now one of the many OU Daily alumni embarking on (hopefully) successful careers in the industry.

Covering high school sports for the Daily taught me the importance of local journalism, something I appreciate here in Las Cruces. Everyone has a story to tell, and it’s my job to tell those stories and highlight what’s special about them. I also strive to be a trusted, informative voice that people can follow, especially at a time when trust in the media is declining.

I am very ambitious and have set my sights high. I hope this is not my only stop, as I hope to eventually achieve even greater things in my career. But while I am here, I hope to be a consistent, informative and thoughtful voice in the Las Cruces community. I hope this is a new era of sports reporting here, one that I am excited to lead.
