Large tree tears down power lines in Greenville County and blocks road

GREENVILLE COUNTY, SC (WSPA) – A large tree fell along a road in Greenville County Tuesday afternoon, leaving hundreds of people without power.

According to the Parker District Fire Department, the tree fell across Perry Road near Assembly Drive.

“I actually came home for lunch and was sitting on the chair with my puppies,” said Michael Muyot. “Then I heard this huge bang. I couldn’t believe that the huge tree hadn’t taken down a house. Thank God no one was hurt.”

According to the fire department, no one was injured, but the tree tore down several power lines.

“The tree was about 70 feet tall,” said Deputy Chief Caleb Story. “It took down most of the power lines on that side of the street.”

Perry Road was closed for several hours as crews worked to clean up the damage.

Duke Energy was on site working to restore power to nearly 900 customers.

Greenville County Schools said classes at nearby Cherrydale Elementary School were not affected despite the power outage.

The failure affected traffic lights at at least two busy intersections.

“The main affected intersections we saw were State Park Road and Poinsett Highway and State Park Road and N. Pleasantburg Drive,” Story said.

The electricity supply in the district had been restored since 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
