Swedish prosecutors confirmed on Tuesday that a rape investigation was underway after media reports linked French soccer player Kylian Mbappe to the investigation following a visit to Stockholm, but did not identify the suspect.

On Monday, Swedish newspapers Aftonbladet and Expressen reported that a rape investigation had been opened following Mbappe’s two-day visit to the city. They said the alleged incident occurred at a hotel on October 10, but no suspect was named and no further details were released.

Expressen identified Mbappe as a suspect on Monday, citing anonymous sources, while Aftonbladet confirmed the information on Tuesday. Expressen described Mbappe as having “reasonable suspicion” of rape and sexual assault, which are considered lower suspicions under Swedish law.

Mbappe criticizes “fake news” on social media

However, the Real Madrid star criticized the “fake news” and also dismissed it on his social media.

In a post on X, Mbappe addressed the report, saying: “FAKE NEWS!!!!

In the tweet, Mbappe was apparently referring to the case he is involved in with his former club PSG over unpaid wages from his time at the French club.

When contacted by AFP on Monday, Mbappe’s representatives said they were unaware of a legal complaint lodged against him.

The French star did not attend France’s recent Nations League games and visited Stockholm with a group of people last Thursday.
