Kylian Mbappe keeps a clean sheet, Real Madrid beats Real Valladolid

Kylian Mbappe was once again left empty-handed as Real Madrid belatedly started the defence of their La Liga title with a 3-0 win over Real Valladolid.

The French superstar, who failed to score on his league debut in the 1-1 draw at Real Mallorca last weekend, once again failed to get on the scoresheet and it was Carlo Ancelotti’s substitutes who ended Valladolid’s hopes of a draw.

Federico Valverde brought the game to a halt at the Bernabeu five minutes into the second half, but it was late goals from Brahim Diaz and Endrick, who came on for Mbappe in the 86th minute – his first goal for the club – that gave Madrid the win.

Antoine Griezmann’s inch-perfect free kick put derby rivals Atletico Madrid on the way to their first league win of the season against Girona.

With a 39th-minute set piece, the French midfielder gave Atletico an advantage over the team that denied them third place last season. Marcos Llorente’s 48th-minute strike and a third from substitute Koke secured Atletico a 3-0 win at the Civitas Metropolitano, on a night that saw new signing Conor Gallagher make his debut from the bench.

There were dramatic final phases at the Estadio Municipal de Butarque, as all three goals in Leganés’ 2-1 victory against Las Palmas were scored in the last 19 minutes.

Substitutes Juan Cruz and Enric Franquesa did the damage to the hosts. Daniel Rabaseda Antolin missed a penalty in the second half, while Sandro Ramirez’s replay in injury time barely counted.

Alaves, whose defender Aleksandar Sedlar was sent off four minutes from time, played 0-0 at home to Real Betis.

Serge Gnabry was the hero of FC Bayern Munich, who started the new Bundesliga season late with a hard-fought 3-2 win at Wolfsburg.

Bayern, whose run of 11 consecutive titles was ended by Bayer Leverkusen last season, took the lead through Jamal Musiala’s opener but fell behind to Lovro Majer’s brace, the first of which came from the penalty spot before Jakub Kaminski’s own goal and Gnabry’s 82nd-minute winner, assisted by Harry Kane, turned the tide.

FC St. Pauli celebrated its return to the top league with a 0-2 defeat against Heidenheim. Paul Wanner and Jan Schoppner were on the scoresheet.

In Serie A, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was among the goalscorers as Napoli secured a comfortable 3-0 win over Bologna.

Captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo scored in first-half stoppage time before Kvaratskhelia and substitute Giovanni Simeone completed the rest of the match.

Emmanuel Gyasi and a penalty from Lorenzo Colombo gave Empoli a nice 2-1 win at Roma, despite a late consolation goal from substitute Eldor Shomurodov.

Scottish striker Che Adams’ first goal for Turin was enough to secure a 2-1 win over Atalanta in the Champions League.

Mateo Retegui had put the visitors ahead, but Ivan Ilic’s first-half equaliser paved the way for Adams to take the points four minutes into the second half.

Venezia, meanwhile, secured their first point since promotion after a 0-0 draw at Fiorentina.

Mason Greenwood’s third goal rescued Marseille a point from a 2-2 home draw with Reims in Ligue 1.

The hosts took the lead through Amine Harit, but then fell behind 2-1 through goals from Sergio Akieme and Yaya Fofana before Greenwood equalised with a header.

An own goal from Julien Le Cardinal helped Lens maintain their perfect start to the season with a 2-0 home win over last season’s surprise package Brest.

Newly promoted Auxerre suffered a bitter defeat, losing 2-0 in Nantes, and frontman Ado Onaiwu was sent off.

Goals from Andrey Santos and Emanuel Emegha, as well as an own goal from Christopher Wooh, helped Strasbourg to a 3-1 home win against Rennes, while Shavy Babicka secured Toulouse’s second consecutive draw with a 73rd-minute equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Nice.
