Kyler Murray knew the 49ers couldn’t catch up 44 yards from the touchdown

Good things happen when quarterback Kyler Murray controls the football, as evidenced by his 50-yard touchdown run against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 5.

And similar to his impressive touchdown to tight end Elijah Higgins in Week 2, Murray knew it was over before he was out of danger.

Murray and the Cardinals scored their fifth opening touchdown in as many games and quickly took hold of the 49ers’ defense.

After an early three-pointer from Brock Purdy and the 49ers’ offense, Murray needed just two plays to make an impact on Sunday.

After a 22-yard catch-and-run from tight end Trey McBride, Murray did the rest behind a 50-yard TD sprinter. It marks the longest rushing score of Murray’s career and the third-longest run in franchise history.

According to NFL Next Gen Stats, Murray reached a top speed of 21.27 miles per hour. That’s the fastest speed by a QB as a ball carrier in the last eight seasons.

Moving into the tilt and getting Murray more involved in the run game were among the biggest changes needed after he wasn’t a factor the week before.
